As any significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
