Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
