The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
