The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
